How to Brand Yourself Apart From Your Business

If you're an entrepreneur, you probably already know that branding is one of the most crucial steps you can take on the path to success.

Brands are what set you apart from the competition and tell your audience something about your business.

But just as you need to brand your business, you as the owner need to brand yourself.

Same Concept, Different Strategy

Whether you are about to brand your business or brand yourself the ideas are very similar.

The questions you need to ask before you do this are similar as well.

Who am I? (Who is my business?)

What do I stand for? (What is the purpose of my business?)

What are my strengths? (What am I selling better than my competitors?)

Answering these key questions will be the starting point for deciding on a name for your individual brand. It is the jumping off place for reaching your target audience.

Substance over Shiny

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to brand themselves, is coming up with some unique name that only serves to grab attention. There's nothing wrong with a unique name if it says something about your brand but keep it relevant.

Brand Yourself with a Tagline Instead

Logos are great for a business but are not really considered necessary when dealing with an individual brand.

Try a tagline instead! Using your individual name is fine but it needs to stand out in some way.

Are you a Mom Blogger? There are thousands of those but that's no reason you can't set yourself apart.

Review the answers to those questions that you asked yourself above. See if they spark a creative, unique tagline.

Remember: Personal Branding is a Process Many branding experts actually don't recommend hiring someone in their field to help you with this as no one knows you like you. Trust your instincts.

Adjusting your personal brand can be much easier and flexible than building a business brand, not to mention cheaper!

Establishing your personal brand through social media is a great place to start building some connection with people. Consumers are much more interested in dealing with individuals than corporations.

There is no substitute for personal interaction. Free platforms are available all across the web for you to start creating your personal brand "voice", such as:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Instagram
  • Tumblr

None of these services cost you a penny, only some well-invested time interacting with your target audience. Speaking of interaction.....

Don't Forget Face-to-Face

We all love to hide behind our laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

However networking with other professionals will create opportunities to increase your clientele. You can also use some of your networking time to simply observe how other people are attempting to brand themselves.

See for yourself what appears to be working and not working for them.

Map it Out

Sometimes it helps to see things in black and white. A Venn Diagram can help you distinguish how you want to brand your business, how you want to brand yourself, and what, if any, overlap there should be.

Branding yourself doesn't have to be a tough process.

Don't overthink it! DO think about what sets you apart, and build on that. I'd love to help!
